If you’ve read my ‘Happy in Hungary‘ post, you’ll know the many reasons I love Budapest.
It will probably always be one of my favourite cities, but the last time I was there (2015), the locals seemed to have figured out the benefits that many tourists can bring to their businesses. They have also figured out that tourists will need sustenance throughout their explorations, and that sometimes, they won’t have considered the currency conversions in their travels.
Of course, this is usually the first thing I check. The first month or so I spent backpacking, I was travelling quickly, and though many countries with different currencies. I tried to have a handle on how much I was spending, but sometimes its hard to keep track. 1500 Hungarian Forints is about 10$, but 1500 Polish Zloty is more like 500$.
My day of arrival it was hot. I was out exploring the castle and I had already used up my water bottle. I noticed a crowd around a lemonade stand. Strawberry lemonade, lime lemonade, etc. They were all pretty and looked oh-so-cold and delicious.
First mistake: I ordered a strawberry lemonade without asking the price first.
Second mistake: Once I heard the price (and was momentarily concerned about the price of 1500 forints), I felt guilty asking for a second to convert the currency, and did not even contemplate that I didn’t need to accept it until I was ready
Ultimately, in the span of a few seconds, I took the drink, paid the money, and walked away.
The result: this was actually the best lemonade I’d ever had in my life. Refreshing. Icy. Very fruity with lemon aftertaste. And a strawberry decoration.
While I wandered away from the stall, I finally figured out that I had just spent about 10$ on a glass of lemonade. Yikes!
Now, looking back on it, I didn’t need to feel bad about that purchase. It was delicious. 10$ to me is not very much. 10$ to these women and families selling their drinks was likely to make a difference in their lives (I hope!).
And I learned a few good lessons with the experience. Always check your currency conversions and know how much money you are actually spending.
